WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS
TO BECOME A PLASTIC SURGEON?
The training to become a plastic surgeon consists
of four years of college, four years of medical school, five years
of general surgery residency resulting in board certification, and
two additional years of residency in plastic surgery resulting in
board certification. There are a few medical schools that offer
a six year residency including three years of general surgery and
three years of plastic surgery resulting in board certification
in plastic surgery.
In selecting a plastic surgeon, you should make
sure that the doctor has completed a two-year residency in plastic
surgery and is board certified with the American Board of Plastic
Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties only recognizes
the American Board of Plastic Surgery for certification in the profession
of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
